Kords is made by Launchcore Ltd ("we", "us"). This explains what Kords does with your information. The short version: your dictation history stays on your Mac, we never keep your audio or your words, and we only collect anonymous counts if you say yes.
The short version
- Dictating with on-device recognition sends nothing anywhere.
- Cloud accuracy, Voices and translation send audio or text to our server and our service providers to get the result back. We don't keep it.
- Your dictation history, dictionary, voices and settings stay on your Mac.
- We never take screenshots, log keystrokes, read window titles, or sell your data.
- Anonymous usage counts and crash reports are off unless you turn them on.
Who is responsible
Launchcore Ltd, a company registered in the United Kingdom, is responsible for the personal information described here. You can contact us at [email protected].
What stays on your Mac
Your saved dictations (the text, the app it went into and the date), your dictionary, your voices, your settings and your Kordies Collection progress are stored only on your Mac. You choose how long history is kept (Settings, then Privacy and history) and you can clear it at any time. Kords doesn't keep your audio once the text has been made.
When Kords uses our servers
Cloud accuracy: your audio is sent to Kords' server (hosted by Supabase in Ireland) and passed to our speech-to-text provider, currently Groq, with OpenAI as a backup, which turns it into text. It is processed and discarded. We don't store the audio or the transcript.
Voices and translation: the text of your dictation, your voice's settings (such as contractions and emoji), your dictionary words and the name of the app you're typing in are sent to the same server and to our AI provider, currently Groq, with OpenAI as a backup. Window titles and screen contents are never sent. Nothing is stored.
Our providers process this only to give us the result. Their own terms and privacy policies govern how they handle it. Some are based in the United States, and transfers rely on appropriate safeguards.
Using these features is your choice. Kords works without an account.
Your account
If you sign in, we keep your email address (to send you sign-in codes), your plan, and a running count of the seconds and words you've used (to apply your plan's allowance). We also keep your Kordies Collection with your account, so it looks the same on every Mac you sign in on: your total word count, your daily streak, which Kordies you've unlocked, which months you've dictated in, and which built-in voices you've tried. These are counts and names only. On a Duo or Family plan, the person who pays can add others by email. We keep those emails with their account so each person joins the plan when they sign in. The person who pays sees the emails they added and whether each has joined, never how anyone uses Kords. We don't keep your words or your audio. Deleting your account removes this information.
Payments
When paid plans are on sale, payments are handled by our payment provider. We never see or store your card details.
Optional: anonymous counts and crash reports
Both are off until you turn them on, either when Kords asks once or later in Settings, then Privacy and history.
Anonymous counts: once a day, Kords sends a random ID that isn't linked to your email or account, the app and macOS version, your language, your plan name, and that day's counts: dictations, words, seconds of speech, minutes Kords was running, minutes its window was open, and which features you used. Never your words, audio, app names or window titles. Turning it off deletes the ID, the counts on your Mac and the data we hold.
Crash reports: if Kords crashes or freezes for a couple of seconds, a report goes to Sentry (in the EU) with where in Kords' code it happened, the app and macOS version, and the kind of Mac it ran on (such as the model and memory). No screenshots, name, email or anything you said. Sentry may work out a rough location, such as your nearest town, from your connection as the report arrives. We ask Sentry not to store IP addresses.
What we never do
- Take screenshots or record your screen.
- Log your keystrokes.
- Read window titles or the contents of your documents.
- Keep your audio or the words you dictate on our servers.
- Sell your data or show you ads.
- Use advertising trackers.
The clipboard
To place text at your cursor, Kords copies it to the clipboard, pastes it, then puts back what was there about two seconds later. Clipboard manager apps may see this.
How long we keep things
Account information and usage counts are kept while your account exists, because your plan needs them. Anonymous counts are kept until you turn the setting off. Crash reports are kept by Sentry for a limited period.
Your rights
Under UK data protection law you can ask for a copy of your information, ask us to correct or delete it, restrict or object to how we use it, and receive it in a portable form. Where we rely on your consent you can withdraw it at any time. Email [email protected] and we'll help. You can also complain to the Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk.
Why we may use your information
We use it to provide Kords to you (our contract with you), to keep the service secure and prevent abuse (our legitimate interests), and for anonymous counts and crash reports only with your consent.
Children
Kords is for people aged 16 and over. It isn't aimed at anyone younger and we don't knowingly collect information from people under 16. If we find out we have, we'll delete it. If you're under 18, please ask a parent or guardian before you buy a paid plan. A Duo or Family plan can only include people aged 16 and over.
Changes
We may update this policy. If the changes are significant we'll tell you in the app.
